Despite just 18 wins on the season, the Cleveland Cavaliers have been one of the most fun teams in the NBA. Now, you’re probably wondering why or how anyone could possibly say that.
It’s because of guys like Cedi Osman and Collin Sexton that the Cavs are worth watching. Of course, Kevin Love will always be a reason to watch, but he hasn’t played as much this year so the previous two have shined.
Despite what many naysayers had to say about Sexton early in the year, they turned out to be totally wrong. Now, Sexton doesn’t pass like Trae Young does, but those saying that he didn’t know how to play the game were wrong. That wasn’t true, but everything was moving so strangely around the entire franchise that he had no time to figure anything out.
Sexton has had great command of the floor ever since Love came back. He also did something that no other rookie has ever done in Cavs history. He has scored 23+ points in six consecutive games as a rookie. He passed Mr. Cavalier, Austin Carr, for that feat. That shows great patience and shows that he is a score-first point guard, There is no issue with that.
Osman, on the other hand, has needed a while to adjust to the NBA’s style of play which differs from European style basketball. Osman isn’t a player like Luka Doncic so he didn’t perfectly adjust to the NBA. He also didn’t get much playing time in his first year and wasn’t a high pick.
Despite a major transitional period, Osman has been the perfect second man to Sexton when Love isn’t playing. He has finally figured out what to do and when to do it. Osman is now doing all the things asked of him without doing too much outside of his abilities.
His ability to shoot and slash while running the floor fits like a glove along with Sexton and Love. Now that Osman understands what he is able to do on the court, Coach Larry Drew has let these guys be themselves and that has allowed the Cavs to flourish when possible. It’s been tough, but these two guys have made watching the Cavs fun for the most part.
Going from here
It’s hard to put them both down because of Cleveland’s 18-53 record on the year but, it isn’t all their fault that the team didn’t win. Let’s see a team with mostly unknown and unwanted players win without their superstar. No matter, Love’s injury let a lot of guys prove what they could be.
Osman and Sexton weren’t the only ones. Larry Nance Jr, Jordan Clarkson and many others got the chance early. Marquese Chriss, Brandon Knight, David Nwaba and more have proven that they could be key contributors to this team in the future.
For now, just enjoy a stress-free end to the regular season as every Cavs loss is really a Cavs win. Here’s to hoping that the Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks go on massive win streaks. This is still all about the TANK!
