On Friday night, Greg Hardy made his fourth UFC appearance in Boston as part of the UFC on ESPN2 main card. Of course, Hardy is a former NFL defensive end who spent five years with the Carolina Panthers and a year with the Dallas Cowboys. His career was derailed due to domestic violence issues.
In any case, Ben Sosoli was Hardy’s opponent in this fight. It was initially ruled a victory for the former defensive end by unanimous decision (29-28 on all three judges’ scorecards.).
Great until it wasn’t
However, between the second and third rounds, something was amiss.
The telecast showed footage of Hardy using an inhaler for exercise-induced asthma.
Hardy asked for permission to use this inhaler, which was granted.
Incredibly, ESPN’s commentary team was quick and —correct— to point out that Hardy’s use of this inhaler was completely illegal and should not have been allowed.
During the post-fight press conference after Friday night’s main event, it was announced that Greg Hardy’s victory was reversed to a no-contest by order of the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission.
In the press conference, Greg Hardy met with the media and plead his case.
“It’s on the commission paperwork when I weighed in,” Hardy said.
“It’s on the USDA paperwork when I take every single drug test, so I’ll let you all know that I’m not taking steroids and I’m just naturally a monster.”
Hardy was noncommittal when asked about the possibility of getting his victory restored.
“Man, I’m really just worried about what my boss thinks,” he said.
“The worst part for me is here I am, letting people down again, you know what I mean? It’s a sucky feeling.”
Punishment for his actions
In my opinion, if Hardy’s inhaler use was caught sooner, as it should have been, the contest should have been halted immediately and he should have been disqualified.
If anybody, regardless of who they are or the job they have, breaks the rules on the job, they have to be punished.
That’s all there is to it.
Was this a chaotic situation?
Was the right call to reverse the result to a no-contest made?
Should Greg Hardy have been punished for using his inhaler?
Should he be punished in the future for breaking the rules on Friday night?
The answer to all four of these questions is a resounding, obvious yes.
